múm es una banda islandesa de Post-Rock que se caracteriza por sus suaves voces, el uso de efectos electrónicos, y una gran variedad de instrumentos musicales clásicos y no convencionales.
La banda se formó en 1997. Sus miembros originales eran Gunnar Örn Tynes, Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, y las hermanas Gyða y Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir.
Según Kristín Valtýsdóttir, el nombre de la banda no pretende significar nada, pero en una reciente entrevista, con el ahora extinto periódico islandés Fókus, el nombre fue explicado como una pintura. Esto es, las letras de "múm" son como dos elefantes moviendo sus trompas.
Debutaron con el doble LP Yesterday Was Dramatic Today Is Ok ofreciendo una delicada mezcla de música electrónica, instrumentos clásicos (acordeones, trompetas, violines, etc.) y voces; luego de lo cual lanzaron dos álbums de mezclas (Remixed y Please Smile My Noise Bleed).
Durante el año 2002 lanzan su segundo álbum Finally We Are No One, que se caracteriza por un sonido más cercano al pop y al rock e incluye algunos temas más experimentales. También existe una versión en islandés del disco titulada Loksins Erum Við Engin
Ese mismo año, Gyða dejó la banda para retomar sus estudios en Reykjavík. Su hermana Kristín deja la banda durante el año 2006 para continuar su carrera musical por separado. Algunas de sus recientes obras incluyen un proyecto bajo el nombre de Kría Brekkan, trabajando junto a Eiríkur Orri (trompetista de múm) para una pieza de danza moderna y también colaboró con el segundo álbum de la banda islandesa Stórsveit Nix Noltes.
Summer Make Good (su tercer disco) fue lanzado el año 2004 y volvió a una manera más tradicional de componer pero centrando más el sonido en las voces que en la electrónica.
Su cuarto y último álbum "Go go smear the poison ivy" fue lanzado el año de 2007.

Yo les recomiendo arrancar con Finally We Are No One(Loksins Erum Við Engin es exactamente igual pero cantado en islandés lo que le da un poco más de onda). El primer disco tiene demasiado ruidismo y puede resultar difícil entrarle. Summer Make Good, tal vez, sea el más fácil de escuchar porque, dentro de lo que es múm, es el más popero. En el último se vuelven medio locos y hace cosas (más)raras pero no por eso deja de ser tan genial como el resto.
Prometí agregar discos así que ahora van.
